Not Turning

The engine runs, you squeeze the lever, and nothing happens. Four things can cause that — and one observation tells you which, before you order a single part.

Before anything else. Shut the engine off, remove the ignition key, and wait until every moving part has stopped before putting a hand anywhere near the housing. Augers store energy in compacted snow and can rotate suddenly when a blockage releases — even with the engine off. Use the clean-out tool, never your hand.

The Question That Narrows It

Repair guides for this fault tend to list the same four or five causes in order of frequency and link you to a part for each. That is useful once you know which one you have, and useless before.

There is a faster way in. The auger drive runs engine → belt → impeller shaft → gearbox → auger shaft → augers, with the engagement cable controlling whether the belt is tensioned at all. Every fault sits somewhere on that chain, so what still moves tells you where the break is.

Engage the auger control and look at the impeller — the paddle wheel at the back of the housing, behind the augers.

Sheared Pins, or the Gearbox

The belt and cable are doing their jobs: power reached the impeller shaft. The break is after that point.

  • Shear pins — by far the most likely. Check both. An auger that spins freely by hand with no resistance has lost its pin
  • Gearbox — if the pins are intact and the auger shaft still will not drive, suspect stripped gears or a sheared shaft key. This is the expensive branch

Belt or Engagement Cable

Power is not reaching the impeller shaft at all, so the fault is upstream of everything in the housing.

  • Auger belt — broken, stretched, or jumped off its pulley. A belt that has failed completely gives nothing; one that is merely worn gives weak, intermittent drive with squealing
  • Engagement cable — stretched or snapped, so squeezing the lever never tensions the idler pulley. The lever will often feel slack or oddly light
  • Idler pulley — seized or with a failed spring, so the belt never gets tensioned

A Single Sheared Pin

The easiest outcome on the page. Each auger is pinned to the shaft independently, so one pin failing leaves that side freewheeling while the other drives normally.

Belt, cable, and gearbox are all confirmed working by the fact that one side turns. Replace the pin on the stationary side.

Context helps too. If the auger stopped the instant the machine hit something — a buried newspaper, a chunk of ice, a stone — that is a shear pin doing precisely what it exists to do. If it faded over a session with squealing or a burning smell, that is a belt.

What Each Repair Involves

Never substitute a hardware store bolt for a shear pin. Shear pins are engineered to break at a specific torque — that is their entire function. A grade-5 bolt that refuses to shear does not make the machine tougher; it routes the impact into the gearbox and auger shaft instead. People do this every winter and turn a two-dollar part into a gearbox rebuild. Use the pin specified for your model, and only that.

Battery Machines Are a Different Diagnosis

Nearly every guide to this fault assumes a gas two-stage with belts, pulleys, and pins. If you have a cordless machine, most of that does not apply.

Many single-stage battery snow blowers drive the auger directly from an electric motor, with no belt and no shear pin anywhere in the path. There is no mechanical shear point to inspect, so an auger that will not turn points somewhere else entirely:

A protection cutout. Battery machines commonly stop the auger to protect the motor when it jams, when the pack is too cold, or when current spikes. Clearing the obstruction and cycling the power resolves a surprising share of these.

The control switch or safety interlock. A failed bail switch or interlock means the machine never commands the auger to run, even though everything else works normally.

Battery state. A pack that is cold, low, or unable to deliver peak current may run the machine while refusing the load spike an auger demands.

The drive motor itself. Less common, and usually a warranty conversation rather than a driveway repair.

Larger two-stage battery machines are a hybrid case — electric drive but often conventional augers, gearboxes, and shear pins, so the tree above applies to the mechanical half. Worth confirming against your parts diagram which of the two you own before ordering anything.

Stopping It Happening Again

Shear pins fail because the auger hits something. Reducing what it can hit is most of the prevention.

Set the skid shoes for the surface. Running too low on gravel feeds stones straight into the auger, which is the most common cause of repeated pin failures. Covered in snow blowers on gravel driveways.

Walk the driveway first after a heavy fall — newspapers, extension cords, doormats, and frozen debris all shear pins reliably.

Carry spare pins on the machine. They fail mid-storm, which is exactly when the parts shop is shut. Two spares and the right socket taped inside the belt cover takes the whole problem from a lost weekend to fifteen minutes.

Inspect belts between seasons, not during them. A belt showing glazing or fraying in October is a belt that will strand you in January.

Auger Questions

Check whether the impeller still turns. If it does, suspect sheared pins first and the gearbox second. If nothing turns, the auger belt or engagement cable is the more likely fault.
