Everyone gives the same answer: spring and fall, twice a year. For a lot of yards that schedule is genuinely wrong — and it fails in a specific, predictable way.
The standard advice assumes a particular yard: a few deciduous trees, at some distance from the house, dropping their leaves over a few weeks in autumn. Clean after that drop, clean again in spring to clear what winter left behind, done.
That is a real schedule for a real yard, and if it describes yours you can stop reading and go with it. The problem is that it gets repeated as though every yard works that way, and a lot of them do not — because the trees involved shed on completely different timetables.
Species matters more than climate for timing, because it determines when material arrives rather than how much.

Mixed yards take the highest number on the list, not the average. One pine among the maples means a pine schedule, because the pine keeps shedding while everything else has finished.
There is no single best time of year to clean gutters — there is a best time for each pass, and how many passes you need came out of the table above.
The window is narrower than it sounds. Too early and you will be doing it twice. Too late and you are clearing wet, heavy debris in cold weather — or not at all, once it has frozen into the channel.
Marcescent species release their leaves here, long after the autumn clean. Skip it and the gutters spend the wettest months of the year full, which is when standing debris does the most damage to seals and fascia.
Spring clears what winter deposited and handles spring's own shedding — blossom, catkins, seed pods. These pack tighter than leaves and are easy to underestimate because they look like nothing much.
Not a scheduled pass for most homes. Worth a check after a significant storm, and worth one on a pine-heavy lot where needles never stop arriving.
Whatever the season, dry debris moves far more easily than wet, which affects the day you pick as much as the month. That is covered separately in cleaning gutters before or after rain.
A schedule is a default, not an instruction. Any of these means clean now regardless of when you last did.
If you only manage one, make it the one before winter, and the reason is not the leaves themselves.
Debris left in a gutter through winter stays wet continuously rather than drying between rains. That constant saturation is what degrades sealed joints, which is the mechanism behind most early seam and corner leaks. It also means that when a thaw arrives, meltwater has nowhere to drain and freezes in place instead — the difference between an ice dam that drains harmlessly and one that backs up under the shingles.
A clogged gutter in July is untidy. The same clog in January is doing damage every single day.
