It starts, it idles, and then it dies the second you open it up. That pattern points almost anywhere but the carburetor first — it's an air, fuel, or exhaust restriction. Here's how to find it, cheapest fix first.
At idle, the engine sips a tiny amount of air and fuel. Open the throttle and it suddenly demands a lot more of both — and has to push a lot more exhaust out. If anything in that path is partly blocked, the engine gets enough to idle but not enough to run wide open, so it bogs, sputters, and quits the moment you ask for full power. That's why "starts and idles, dies at throttle" is a restriction symptom, not a broken-engine symptom, and why the fix is usually cheap.

It won't start at all, stalls the instant it drops to idle, or only acts up once it's hot — that last one is usually vapor lock, a separate hot-restart issue.
Work top to bottom. Each step is cheaper and more common than the one below it, and the carburetor — the thing everyone blames first — comes last on purpose. Most bog-downs are solved by step 1 or 2.
The single most common cause. A filter caked with dust lets just enough air through to idle, then starves the engine the moment you open the throttle and it needs to breathe. It's a two-minute check and it's free.
Gas older than about a month goes stale and forms varnish; ethanol pump gas is worse because it pulls in moisture. Stale or badly mixed fuel bogs the engine under load and gums everything downstream. On a 2-stroke, too much oil in the mix does it too.
The little filter inside the tank passes enough fuel to idle but chokes off the higher flow full throttle needs — so the engine dies exactly when you rev it. It's a cheap part and a classic idles-fine-dies-at-throttle culprit, especially after fuel has been left to go stale.
The spark arrestor is a small screen in the muffler. Carbon builds up on it over time — worse with a rich mix or cheap oil — and a blocked screen traps exhaust, which chokes the engine under load just like a plugged intake. Frequently overlooked because it's out of sight.
If air, fuel, and exhaust are all clear and it still bogs, now look at the carburetor. Stale fuel leaves varnish in the tiny high-speed passages that feed full throttle, so it idles on the low circuit but starves when opened up. A worn or fouled spark plug can mimic the same misfire under load.
Last, and least common on a filter you keep clean: the carburetor's high-speed mixture is set too lean to sustain full throttle. On carbs with adjustment needles, a lean high setting bogs the engine at the top end. Only touch this once everything above is ruled out — a lean run can damage the engine.
