Where the Water Comes From Tells You the Part

A pressure washer moves water under high pressure through a chain of fittings, valves, and seals, and a leak can start at any one of them. The trick isn't guessing — it's watching where the water actually originates while the machine runs. A drip at a hose connection is a different fix from water weeping out of the pump body, and knowing which you have saves you from replacing a pump that was never the problem.

One drip is normal, so don't panic at the first sign of water. When the machine runs without spraying, the thermal release valve is designed to vent a little hot water. The causes below run cheapest first — fittings and the release valve before seals, and seals before the pump itself. Several of them share a part with the unloader valve, which weeps from its own o-ring when worn.

The Six Causes, in the Order to Check Them

Work top to bottom. Each step is cheaper and more common than the one below it. Most bottom leaks are solved at step 1 or 2 — long before you're anywhere near replacing the pump.

Fitting

Loose Hose or Inlet/Outlet Connection

The most common cause, and free to fix. A hose connection, the water inlet, or the high-pressure outlet that's loose or has old thread tape lets water seep out and run down to the bottom, looking like an internal leak when it isn't.

Fix: Hand-tighten every connection, then check again with the water on. Replace worn thread tape and any cracked or hardened hose/fitting o-rings. Don't overtighten — that splits fittings and causes the leak you're chasing.

Normal · Valve

Thermal Release Valve Venting

When the machine runs without spraying, water recirculating in the pump heats up, and the thermal release valve opens to dump the hot water. Occasional dripping from it is normal and protective. Only a continuous stream means the valve itself has failed.

Fix: If it drips only after running idle a while and stops once you spray, leave it alone — it's working. If it leaks constantly, replace the thermal release valve; it usually unscrews and swaps in minutes.

Seal

Worn Inlet or Outlet O-Ring

The inlet and outlet valve seals are among the most common leak points. When these o-rings harden or wear, water escapes at the connection and tracks down to the base — a small, cheap seal causing what looks like a big problem.

Unloader

Weeping Unloader O-Ring

A drip specifically around the unloader, with no crack in the pump body, is usually the unloader's own o-ring letting water past. It often shows up alongside pressure symptoms, since the same worn seal that leaks also can't hold a steady bypass.

Pump

Worn Pump Piston Seals or Packings

Water weeping directly from the pump body, with no crack visible, points to worn piston seals or packings inside. A related tell is milky pump oil, which means water has crossed a worn crankcase seal into the oil side.

Fix: Rebuild the pump with a seal/packing kit if you're comfortable opening the head; replace the o-rings and any scored parts. If the oil is milky, drain and refill it and replace the seals that let water in.

Damage

Pump Head Cracked by Freezing

Last, and the one you can't repair: a pump stored over winter with water still inside can crack when that water freezes and expands. The leak often shows only under pressure, from a split in the brass or aluminum head.

Fix: A cracked pump head almost always means replacing the pump. Prevent it next time by draining the pump and running pump saver through it before storage so no water is left to freeze.

Common Questions

The leak location tells you the part. Cheapest first: a loose hose or inlet/outlet fitting, the thermal release valve venting, a worn inlet or outlet o-ring, the unloader o-ring, worn pump piston seals, or a pump head cracked by freezing. Trace where the water originates before replacing anything — most bottom leaks are a cheap seal or fitting.

Occasional dripping from the thermal release valve is normal. When the machine runs without spraying, recirculating water heats up and the valve vents it to let cooler water in — a protective function. But continuous leaking, or water from the pump body or fittings rather than the release valve, points to a worn seal or loose fitting that needs attention.

Often yes. Loose fittings just need tightening or fresh thread tape, and worn o-rings and a bad thermal release valve are cheap, simple swaps. A pump leaking from worn seals can be rebuilt with a seal kit if you're comfortable opening the head. Replace the whole pump only if the body is cracked or the repair would cost more than half a new pump.

Milky pump oil means water has gotten past the seals into the oil side. Worn crankcase seals let it migrate in, and running it that way accelerates wear. Drain and replace the oil, and replace the seals that let water through. If it recurs or the pump is old, the pump may be near the end of its life.

Most post-storage leaks are dried-out seals or a pump head cracked by freezing. Prevent both by fully draining the pump before storage and running a pump-saver lubricant through it, which coats the seals and displaces water. A freeze-cracked pump usually can't be repaired, so prevention is the whole game.
